  Professional Biography

Dr. Y.T. Chien  had served as the Division Director for Information, Robotics, and Intelligent Systems in the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Chien received his MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. From 1967 to 1982, he was on the faculty of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, University of Connecticut. During that period, he served as Chair of the Department for four years (1976-80) and later became Assistant Dean of Engineering for Computer Research (1980-82). Prior to joining National Science Foundation he spent two years as a researcher and Group Leader at the Artificial Intelligence Center, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. He is author (or co-author) of three books: Fundamentals of Computing (John Wiley); Interactive Pattern Recognition (Marcel Dekker); Knowledge-based Systems, Tutorial (IEEE Computer Society Press). He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
