The phenomenal growth in mobile wireless communications combined with the equally impressive global growth in Internet-related services and applications is poised to effect fundamental changes in all walks of life. With this newfound success comes the need to cope with the demand for services that far exceeds early projections. Much of this growth was fueled by early research funded by federal agencies and private industry. Yet the need to reexamine and identify new areas will enable the next generation of innovations.
