1) There is a growing belief in the industry that even the $30 objective for the cost of a loop laser may be beaten. Recently, NTT described the first all-plastic laser package for optical transmission systems (M. Fukuda et al., Pig-tail type laser modules entirely molded in plastic. Proc. ECOC '95, Vol. 2, pp. 549-552, 1995). The "holy grail" of laser packaging, all-plastic encapsulation, has long been expected to result in laser facet degradation and/or unstable fiber coupling. Neither of these effects was seen in the reported device following aging and thermal cycle tests. Some in the industry now believe that a $10 part is foreseeable.
