A move to electronic libraries will alter the fundamental role oflibrarians. Far less attention will be paid to acquisitions, cataloging andcirculation, and much more to systems, online assistance, navigation assistanceand conversion issues. Unless graduate programs for digital librarians areestablished to create trained personnel, the real risk exists that users, particularly young adults who grew up in a digital generation, will outstripthe ability of librarians to assist them.
