Ajinomoto has decided not to actively pursue internal research and development on biodegradable packaging materials. However, the company has joined the Biodegradable Plastics Society to monitor developments in this area. The company is closely monitoring changes in society, government, and consumers to be in a position to move into biodegradable packaging when the situation warrants. The company also suggested that petroleum-based polymers may be preferable to renewable resource-based polymers because the price of petroleum-based products may be more stable and the quality of the products more consistent. It was thought that poly(lactic acid) might be a good compromise in this regard.
