A Misunderstanding in Scientific Education

Different political leaders, teachers, and tech executives have declared that the U.S. is falling behind in math and science education. These include Bill Gates and even President Bush who declared in his 2006 State of the Union that “We need to encourage children to take more math and science, and to make sure those courses are rigorous enough to compete with other nations.” However, according to a report by the Urban Institute, math and science scores of U.S. students have actually increased over the past 20 years. They have grown so high that the U.S. is now close to the top of international rankings. The real issue now is that there aren’t enough jobs for new graduates. From 1985 until 2000, nearly 435,000 U.S. students graduated with degrees in science and engineering. Unfortunately, only 150,00 new jobs are created a year, leaving approximately 285,000 graduates without a job in their field of study.
